Oriental Medicine Practice Management

Applying principles of practice management leads to the development of a successful career. While practice issues are woven throughout the entire Oriental Medicine program curriculum at AMC, specific practice management classes focus on techniques of practice building.

Practice management classes review topics including: Legal and ethical guidelines for practice management in the State of Florida, accounting and record-keeping. Information is presented on setting up your own practice and types of business organizations. Marketing and communication skills are discussed and practiced in class. An in-depth survey of the various types of insurance billing is presented.

Students learn how to create a business plan to start a new practice, how to select a location, advertise, and manage patient appointments.

It’s never too soon to start implementing techniques to help build your acupuncture practice. While you’re designing your business cards, applying for your business license and building your clinic website you can also include some additional and practical steps to ensure a successful start to your acupuncture practice:

Educational materials. Create print materials, such as brochures, newsletters and educational pamphlets for your patients. A presentation portfolio reviewing your services can familiarize potential clients with your practice.

Promotional products. Have free promotional products available for give away. Patients will appreciate this and return the good will with free word of mouth marketing for your practice.

Health fairs. Advertise your new practice by renting a booth at all local health fairs and health-related expos. Giving free pulse analysis and providing health care tips can result in meeting a large number of potential clients. Fairs and expos can also result in networking opportunities with other health care practitioners.

Associations. Join local associations and organizations and become involved within your community. Regular meetings will also provide an opportunity to build your business through speaking about health care topics.

Client policies. Structure client policies concerning scheduling, cancellations and no-shows.

During the last year of Oriental medicine study, if not earlier, students should begin to learn how to build their acupuncture practice. Oriental medicine students in their final year should begin outlining the creation of their clinic website, design other marketing materials and clarify procedures for applying for acupuncture practice and business licenses.

At AMC, studying to become an acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioner is an integrated step-by-step process. Each class builds on one another, helping you to evolve into an alternative medicine healer, and preparing you for a fulfilling career in an integrated health care system.
