When Is the Right Time to Go to Acupuncture School?

how do you know when it's the right time for acupuncture school? Many people know they have a “calling” to do something meaningful with their lives and careers. They want to help people, and they want to make a difference in the health and well-being of others. This passion to be part of something greater than themselves drives the growing interest in careers in acupuncture.

But for many people, uncertainty remains about acupuncture school and whether it’s the right decision for them at this time of their lives. It is common to have questions when it comes to timing, cost, and schedules.

Am I the right age?
People often wonder, am I too old to go to acupuncture school? Or too young? The truth is neither. There is no “right” age to begin this education. At AMC, acupuncture and oriental medicine students range in age from their early 20s to late 70s. In fact, one of our past valedictorians was 76 years old. He started the program at 73. As with most endeavors, age is simply a state of mind.

Is it the right expense?
How much will acupuncture school cost, and is it where I should spend my money? This is also a common concern. The tuition at AMC is $278.15 per credit. The entire master’s degree program is 158 credits, for a total tuition of approximately $44,000. There are additional expenses of $600 to $700 a year for books, supplies, and clinical mal-practice insurance.

That said, an investment in education is always valuable, and going through the acupuncture program at AMC prepares and positions students to launch successful and lucrative acupuncture careers. In addition, AMC offers a variety of payment plans, and financial may be available.

Is it right for my schedule?
Finally, many prospective students are concerned with how they will simply find the time. It can be daunting to consider adding acupuncture school into an already hectic schedule, but it can be done.

AMC’s acupuncture program is designed for working and busy adults, and most AMC students have jobs, families or both.

Classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There is a morning session from 9 am to 1 pm, and an identical evening session from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Students may attend all morning classes, all evening classes, or a combination of both.

In addition, AMC uses a modular system, in which students take only one class at a time. This eliminates scheduling conflicts or a lack of availability in classes that can stall the program. For more than 30 years, this academic schedule has allowed adult learners to be successful in school and realize their dreams on schedule.

Is it the right decision?
When it comes to going to acupuncture school, it is seldom the wrong decision. You can start at any age, and it can be affordable and flexible. If you’d like more insights about whether it’s the right choice for you, prospective students are always welcome to sit in on classes at AMC. While you may not fully understand the material, you will get a feel for the discipline of acupuncture and oriental medicine, and you will be able to speak with students and instructors to get a first-hand perspective.

Another way to assess your decision is to receive an acupuncture treatment in our community clinic. Doing this, you can experience acupuncture as a patient, and observe how instructors and students at AMC teach, learn, and interact.
