Swedish Massage Therapy

Widely practiced in the United States, Swedish massage therapy alleviates many health conditions, such as circulatory and respiratory disorders, back pain, tendonitis, headache and migraine, muscle spasms, and joint pain.

Swedish massage therapy uses many variations and techniques for therapeutic and wellness effects. Many therapists practicing Swedish massage use a variety of strokes:

Effleurage: Consists of gliding strokes from the neck to the base of the spine or from the shoulder to the fingertips. Strokes done on the limbs are directed towards the heart to benefit lymphatic flow and blood circulation.

Petrissage: Rolling, pressing and squeezing of the muscles to enhance circulation. Petrissage cleanses toxins from nerve and muscle tissue with kneading and compression motions.

Friction: Consists of circular or transverse movements near joints, sides of the spine and other bony areas. Increases muscle and joint flexibility and breaks down muscle fiber knots.

Tapotement: A series of percussive movements, tapotement taps or strikes muscles for invigoration and reduces muscle spasms.

Vibration or Shaking: Consists of the therapist rapidly shaking hands on the limbs or back to boost circulation; often utilized for the treatment of low back pain.

Swedish massage is the most requested spa therapy. Comprehensive spa packages frequently combine Swedish massage with other spa treatments, such as body scrubs, wraps and facials. Massage therapists who receive their foundational training in massage school often have additional training in spa treatments if they pursue a career in spa therapy.

Many massage therapists who decide to embark on a career in spa therapy find that they thrive in the spa industry while learning new skills and techniques which they can add to their basic massage training. Learning these additional skills can also expand work opportunities. The demand for qualified spa therapists continues to grow.

Acupuncture & Massage College’s Massage Therapy program includes classes in Swedish massage therapy. Topics reviewed include the theory of massage, classical techniques, professionalism in treatment, and indications and contraindications of massage treatment.

Clinical assessment techniques, postural analysis, as well as exercise and stretch techniques are taught. These techniques assist students in developing a strong background in the healing applications of massage therapy. An introduction to various massage therapy modalities is presented, and instructors supervise clinical practicum.
