The key to long-term weight loss and maintenance may be to lose weight quickly, not gradually, in the initial stages of overweight and obesity treatment. Losing weight fast can have lasting results, suggests a new University of Florida study.
Successful weight loss in overweight and obese individuals is defined as a reduction of 10 percent or more of initial body weight maintained for at least a year. While losing weight slowly initially results in continued weight loss and reduced risk of weight regain, losing weight at a fast initial rate may result in a greater total weight loss long-term.
Assessing 262 obese middle-aged participants, Lisa Nackers and colleagues from UF found that there were long-term advantages to fast initial weight loss. Fast weight losers lost more weight overall, maintained their weight loss for longer and were not more likely to put weight back on than the slower, more gradual weight losers. The study appears in Springer’s International Journal of Behavioral Medicine.
Women who lost weight quickly were three to five times more likely to achieve the clinically significant 10 percent weight loss at 18 months compared to those losing weight at a gradual or slow pace. “We suggest that, within lifestyle weight control programs, substantial efforts should be focused on promoting large rather than small behavioral changes during the initial stages of treatment,” the authors write.

That is interesting. You would think that gradual weight loss would be more affective then fast weight loss. I think there needs to be more research to make this case.

The first paragraph was actually quite interesting- I had heard from other people that they tried the methods of certain programs, some of which seemed to encourage the same notion of burning fat within faster intervals for better results. What is the purpose of loosing weight?to look good?of course yes!but aside from that it is also because we want to be more stronger. In my case I tried plyometric training, I just made sure I have a strong tendons for I will be adding a lot of stress on them and if they’re weak I can risk injuring myself, which will cause delays in seeing improvements. In my weight training, I focus on lifting weights that are 85% of your 1 max rep, and focus on SPEED and quality of the exercise. The faster you’re able to lift the weight the more stress you put on the muscle and the stronger they will become. Ive tried this training and I’m telling this to everyone since I’m gaining more advantages from this.I’m not just looking good but I have a lot of strength for my body.

I own a company that makes natural lice shampoo and other organic products. I have found acupunture and massage to be a great help in relaxation. I had not thought of using it for weight control, but will certainly try that as well.
That’s interesting, I have often heard that long term success is best if you have gradual weight loss, although you think if weight loss is gradual and possibly too slow that people are less likely to stick to the diet long term. If you’re losing weight fast then you can see it and get excited about it and are more likely to stick to it.
I have never tried acupuncture I have always had a bit of a fear of it hurting, it does sound quite interesting though and is quite good from what I’ve heard.
During my weight loss coaching experience I discovered that losing weight to quickly can have both a great impact on my student’s health and body and a negative one as well. I’ve watched multiple of the people that I was working if simply get obsessed by the sudden change of their appearance. While they do indeed much more attractive with a slimmer body, it is pretty hard to accommodate.
That’s why I firmly believe that using various methods in order to start losing weight is extremely important.
I always suggest that the person should change his way of thinking, his attitude.
One step at a time and the success is always near if you seek it.
Knowledge of oriental approach has always helped me coach my students to a higher success rate.

This is a very fascinating article. I would assume that the larger the lifestyle change in the beginning the greater the weight loss, is due to the fact that most people have a greater level of motivation in the beginning. Also, seeing quick results in the beginning would likely help to encourage the continued lifestyle changes that were made, thus resulting in a continued effort to lose weight.

Good summary, i have a few things to offer on top your suggestions,
having just lost 15kg in the last year. I agree it’s best to make
a big effort early while your spirits are high but i would also
say that early morning exercise is vital, taking a multivitamin
is very important and i find that a really good way to eat during
the day is with sliced vegetables(carrots,cucumber,apples) with
some home made dip, spinach and feta or salmon and avocado being my
favourites. The little and often theory of eating but avoid eating within 4
hours of bedtime.

You’re absolutely right. A healthy weight is a product of a stable, healthy lifestyle. Most people who get on a fast weight loss program tend to go back to their old habbits right after they shed those extra pounds. They start to eat the way they did and thus, gradually return to their old weight. I think exercise is the key to maintaining good shape. I lost a lot weight practicing martial arts over the 5 years, and though I’m not exercising regularry right now, I keep a stable body weight of 154 lbs. There are also cool ways to mix compatible foods and separate bad ones, to get the fats burned out almost automatically. Btw. How exactly does acupuncture work for weight loss ?
